Chief Justice Surya Kant declines immediate intervention over alleged police brutality on student protesters at Jantar Mantar
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to urgently hear a plea seeking its intervention over the alleged police action against student protesters during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) agitation at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The matter was mentioned before a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, with the petitioner’s counsel urging the court to take up the issue immediately, citing alleged police brutality during the protests over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and examination reforms.
Refusing an urgent hearing, the Chief Justice remarked, “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time.” When the lawyer referred to videos purportedly showing police using excessive force, the CJI said, “We are not interested in videos. We don’t have time to watch.”
The counsel argued that the demonstrations concerned issues of significant public importance, including alleged irregularities in NEET-UG 2026 and reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA). However, the bench declined to entertain the plea.
The development comes a day after the Delhi High Court also refused to urgently hear a similar petition challenging the police action during the CJP protests.
