Six more deaths reported in 24 hours as flood devastates 11 districts, while Amit Shah assures Central assistance and the state prepares a comprehensive rehabilitation plan
Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened with the death toll rising to 47 after six more fatalities were reported in Sivasagar and Charaideo. More than 7.21 lakh people remain affected across 11 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The floods have impacted 883 villages across 37 revenue circles, with Sivasagar emerging as the worst-hit district, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Floodwaters have submerged 25,375.44 hectares of agricultural lands, while 103 relief camps are sheltering 24.124 displaced people.
Several rivers, including the Burhidihing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri and Kushiyara, continue to flow above the danger level, raising concerns as rainfall persists.
Amid the worsening crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that an inter-ministerial Central team would visit Assam to assess the damage and determine additional assistance.
Calling the floods “unprecedented”, the Chief Minister said around 100 people are still missing and warned the death toll could rise further. He attributed the disaster to upstream cloudbursts in Nagaland and exceptionally high rainfall, adding that the state and Centre would prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation package for affected families.
The Army, Air Force, NDRF and SDRF continue rescue operations, while the flood crisis also triggered political uproar in the Assam Assembly, where Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi was suspended during a protest demanding a discussion on the disaster.
