Lalduhoma eyes decisive ZPM wins, MNF banks on past performances as the counting set for April 27

Aizwal: Aizwal witnessed a calm and orderly polling day as more than 62 per cent of voters turned out for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections on April 21, reflecting steady civic participation across the city.
According to officials, a voter turnout of 62.77 per cent was recorded among the 2.39 lakh eligible electors, who cast their votes across all 19 wards. Voting began at 7 am and concluded at 5 pm without any reports of disruption. However, authorities noted that the final turnout figure may see minor revisions after official consolidation.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed strong confidence in a clear mandate for the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). Speaking after voting, he said the party is “poised for a landslide,” aiming to secure at least 16 seats. He further assured that a ZPM-led civic body would prioritise transparency and accelerate urban development.
Meanwhile, the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) is targeting a third consecutive term. Party president Zoramthanga said the MNF’s governance record remains its strongest asset. At the same time, he criticised the ruling party, alleging declining public confidence.
The contest remains competitive, with 68 candidates, including 28 women, in the fray. While ZPM, MNF, and the Congress are contesting all 19 wards, the BJP has fielded candidates in 11.
With polling completed smoothly, attention now shifts to April 27, when votes will be counted, and the city’s civic leadership will be decided.
