CCTV clues and recoveries strengthen case; victim’s phone, clothes and liquor bottle retrieved

Guwahati: Investigators have uncovered crucial post-accident actions in the Mathgharia crash case, pointing to an alleged attempt by the accused driver to conceal evidence. Police believe Shamim Ahmed acted immediately after the incident to remove traces that could link him to the fatal collision.
Officials said CCTV footage suggests he “deliberately disposed of key evidence,” including changing out of blood-stained clothes near Gharamora Satra Path and throwing them into a drain. During a follow-up search, police recovered those clothes along with the mobile phone of victim Puja Saha from the same location. Investigators suspect the phone was discarded to avoid identification or digital tracking.
Moreover, a liquor bottle was also recovered from the drain area and has been sent for forensic examination. The recovery operation was carried out in the hilly terrain of Mathgharia, with the accused brought to the site to help reconstruct the sequence of events.
The crash, which occurred in the early hours of April 26, involved a Swift car ramming into a stationary truck, killing Akanksha Saikia, Puja Saha, and Armina Ahmed. Police findings indicate the group had spent hours at a rooftop bar in Bhangagarh, from around 11 pm to nearly 3 am, and had consumed alcohol.
After the accident, Shamim allegedly fled the scene and was later arrested from Lahowal in Dibrugarh. Meanwhile, authorities have cancelled the bar’s licence over alleged violations, further expanding the investigation.
