Victim critical at AMCH as police probe possible links to local electoral rivalry

Dibrugarh: A man sustained critical injuries after unknown assailants opened fire in the Chaulkhowa area of Dibrugarh on Saturday, intensifying concerns over law and order and underlying political tensions in the locality.
The victim, identified as Abid Ahmed, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including a serious injury to his left eye. He was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital, where doctors are closely monitoring his condition.
Police teams quickly reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Officials have not confirmed any arrests yet and said the motive remains under examination. Security presence in the area has been increased to prevent further incidents.
While authorities are treating the case as a criminal attack, several residents have pointed to a possible political backdrop. Locals claim that tensions had been building in the area over differences related to voting choices and party loyalties in the run-up to the elections.
According to accounts from the neighbourhood, earlier disputes had escalated over time, leading to intimidation, property damage, and repeated confrontations. Some residents also alleged threats and acts of vandalism in recent months, contributing to a climate of fear.
Family members of the injured man have questioned the police response, alleging that earlier complaints were not adequately addressed. Responding to the situation, Additional SP (Crime) Atul Kumar said the investigation is at an early stage and assured that further action will follow based on evidence and witness statements.
