Raijor Dal chief demands higher assistance for flood-hit families, Rs 10 lakh compensation and a CBI probe into the Upper Assam floods
Guwahati: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi began a day-long hunger strike in Guwahati on Thursday, September 17, demanding enhanced relief and compensation for families affected by the recent floods in Upper Assam.
The protest is being held outside Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur from 8 am to 4 pm. Gogoi has accused the Assam government and the Centre of failing to adequately address the devastation caused by the floods.
His claims come amid ongoing government relief efforts, including Rs 15,000 interim assistance to affected families in some of the worst-hit districts.
Raijor Dal has demanded immediate financial assistance of Rs 15,000–Rs 25,000 for every affected family and Rs 10 lakh compensation for families who lost homes or property, as well as affected businesses.
Gogoi has also sought a CBI probe into the causes of the floods and action against those he holds responsible. The party has demanded the removal of Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain and action against two MLAs, allegations and demands the government has not been shown to have accepted.
Gogoi said the agitation would continue if the demands were not addressed and warned of a larger protest in Guwahati on September 23.
