The Meghalaya filmmaker allegedly intervened when two men were harassing FTII students; police have registered an FIR and begun an investigation
Shillong: National Award-winning filmmaker and Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) faculty member Dominic M Sangma was allegedly assaulted by two men near the Jollang-Rakap road in Itanagar on Wednesday evening after he intervened when they were allegedly harassing FTII students, police said.
Sangma, who heads the Department of Screenwriting at FTII’s Jote campus, was returning from an evening walk around 6.30 pm when the incident occurred.
According to a complaint filed by his wife, Sangma saw two men allegedly carrying bamboo sticks and bullying students. When he intervened, they allegedly attacked him with fists and bamboo sticks. The complaint further alleged that an FTII security guard and four students were assaulted and wrongfully restrained.
An FIR was registered at Balijan police station under Sections 115(2), 117(2), 126 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused were identified as Techi Nanu and Techi Sanjay, residents of Rakap village.
The Society of A•chik Film & Entertainment (S.A.F.E.) condemned the alleged assault and called for a thorough investigation, legal action and stronger security for artists and academics.
Sangma, from Meghalaya, is known for his work in Garo-language cinema. His film Rapture won Best Garo Film at the 66th National Film Awards.
