Five patients remain under treatment as health teams launch field monitoring, awareness drives and mosquito-control measures to contain the spread of the disease

Guwahati: Health authorities in Assam have heightened disease surveillance and containment efforts after a recent rise in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases in Rangia, where the mosquito-borne infection has already claimed two lives.
According to official reports, five patients are currently undergoing treatment, prompting the Health Department to activate an intensified response in affected areas. Medical teams have been deployed to conduct field assessments, identify vulnerable pockets and monitor the situation closely.
Officials said surveillance activities have been expanded to ensure early detection of suspected cases and facilitate timely medical intervention. At the same time, healthcare workers are coordinating with local communities to strengthen monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
To prevent further transmission, authorities have launched extensive awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of Japanese Encephalitis and the importance of mosquito control. Residents are being encouraged to eliminate stagnant water sources, maintain proper sanitation and use protective measures such as mosquito nets and repellents.
The department is also focusing on community outreach programmes aimed at educating people about symptoms, preventive practices and the need to seek immediate medical attention in case of illness.
Meanwhile, officials have appealed to residents to cooperate with health teams and remain vigilant as efforts continue to contain the disease. With monsoon conditions creating favourable breeding grounds for mosquitoes, authorities are intensifying preventive measures to curb any further spread in Rangia and surrounding areas.
