Dhemaji: The Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) and several other organisations observed a 12-hour Dhemaji bandh on Wednesday, August 12, protesting the alleged firing that injured 11 villagers in Mingmang Badati along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
The bandh, observed from 6 am to 6 pm, disrupted normal life and road connectivity between the two states. The organisations demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible and called for a fair investigation into the incident.
TMPK leaders also warned of an indefinite road blockade if their demands are not addressed. Supporters reportedly blocked the Hollongi, Banderdewa and Gumto entry points on the Assam side, affecting the movement of vehicles and people.
The firing reportedly took place on August 10 following tensions over an alleged land encroachment dispute. The 11 injured villagers are undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
Assam Minister Ranoj Pegu said Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu had assured him of a “proper and impartial investigation” and action against anyone found guilty.
Pegu also said both sides had discussed resuming border talks through the Joint Regional Committees and appealed for peace along the border. Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share an 804.1-km boundary, with several areas remaining disputed.
