Tripura Targets 11 MW Solar Capacity Boost: Expands Clean Energy Push

State plans solar installations in 58 BDO offices and 275 village committee offices as part of a wider strategy to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure

Agartala: Tripura is stepping up its renewable energy ambitions, setting a target to add 11 MW of solar power generation capacity during the 2026-27 financial year as it accelerates the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), which is overseeing a series of projects aimed at expanding solar infrastructure across the state. Tripura currently generates around 35 MW of solar energy, and officials are now working to significantly increase that capacity.

TREDA Director General (In-Charge) Debabrata Sukladas said the expansion programme is progressing steadily. “We have set a target of generating 11 MW of solar power during 2026-27, and work is moving ahead in that direction,” he said.

As part of the plan, solar power systems will be installed in all 58 Block Development Offices (BDOs) and 275 village committee offices. The state is also preparing to extend solar coverage to more government establishments, with the tendering process currently in its final stages.

Officials noted that all district magistrate offices have already been equipped with solar panels. Of Tripura’s 1,919 government buildings, only 90 currently operate with solar systems, while the rest will be covered in phases.

The move is expected to improve energy access in remote and hilly regions, where conventional power infrastructure remains difficult and costly to expand.
