The Chief Minister said over 8,000 families have already been surveyed, with the damage assessment expected to cover up to 60,000 families by August 30
Guwahati: Assam may require more than Rs 1,000 crore to repair property and infrastructure damaged by the latest wave of floods and rehabilitate affected families, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday, August 12.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured Assam of full support for the rehabilitation process. The state launched a rapid damage assessment drive on August 9 to identify losses and ensure long-term assistance to affected families.
More than 8,000 families have been surveyed so far, with preliminary damage estimated at around Rs 150 crore. The assessment will continue until August 30 and is expected to cover around 50,000–60,000 families, particularly in severely affected Upper Assam districts.
Sarma said the final rehabilitation cost could exceed Rs 1,000 crore and stressed that the assessment must be conducted without leaving out eligible beneficiaries.
The Chief Minister also said 72 YouTubers from across India had raised funds for flood relief, with several already working on the ground. The government is monitoring how the funds are being utilised.
Meanwhile, Rs 11.3 crore has been released to rebuild 494 flood-damaged Anganwadi centres across Upper Assam. Each centre will receive up to Rs 2.5 lakh for restoration.
