Internet Suspended in Chirang, Kokrajhar After Violence at Runikhata Forest Office

Clash over alleged encroachment turns violent; authorities act to contain tensions in BTR

Kokrajhar: Internet services have been suspended in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts following violent clashes at the Runikhata Forest Range Office near the India–Bhutan border. The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewari, aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and stabilise the law and order situation in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

The unrest escalated on Friday when a large group of protesters attacked the forest office, set government vehicles on fire and caused significant damage to the premises. Several forest personnel were reportedly injured during the confrontation, prompting heavy deployment of security forces to restore control.

However, tensions had been building since Thursday night. Forest officials had detained around 25 individuals over alleged encroachment in the Ripu–Chirang Reserve Forest, part of Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park. In response, local residents gathered outside the office demanding their release, initially staging a peaceful protest.

The situation deteriorated the next day after allegations surfaced that force was used during the detentions, with reports of injuries among women protesters. This triggered anger among residents, who accused authorities of “targeted action” against Adivasi communities, further intensifying the conflict.

Meanwhile, protesters attempted to block nearby roads using burning objects, adding to the disruption. Police officials appealed for calm, urging residents to file formal complaints instead of resorting to violence. Authorities expressed hope that temporary restrictions and security measures would help restore normalcy in the region.
