Golaghat Bihu Committee Cancels Marmita Mitra Performance Amid Row Over Zubeen Garg Songs

Backlash grows over alleged distortion; calls intensify to preserve original compositions

Guwahati: The Golaghat Central Rongali Bihu Committee has cancelled singer Marmita Mitra’s scheduled performance following widespread criticism over the alleged distortion of songs by Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg. The decision, organisers said, was taken in response to public sentiment and with the aim of preserving the integrity of the original compositions.

The controversy gained momentum after Palmee Borthakur urged performers to present Zubeen Garg’s songs in their authentic form during Bohag Bihu events. In a social media appeal, she emphasised that while experimentation is part of music, it should not compromise the “original flavour” of the compositions, especially for younger audiences.

Echoing the same appeal,Garima Saikia Garg said Palmee Borthakur’s statement reflects the sentiments of the entire family and well-wishers. She emphasised that Zubeen Garg’s creations should continue to “flow from heart to heart” across generations, but cautioned that improper presentation would amount to “injustice not only to an artist but also to the culture of a community.”

Stressing collective responsibility, the late singer’s wife further urged performers to remain mindful while presenting his songs, adding that preserving his work is essential to protecting Assam’s cultural heritage.

Meanwhile, criticism also came from All Assam Students’ Union president Utpal Sarma, who termed the alleged distortion “unacceptable” and said it undermines the cultural value of the songs. He urged artistes to maintain respect for original works during traditional festivals.

Adding to the backlash, members of fan groups and sections of the artist community have threatened to boycott events featuring Mitra if she does not issue a public apology. Some have even warned of legal action, alleging disrespect to the legacy of Zubeen Garg.

Notably, the issue comes during a sensitive Bihu season, with many events turning into tributes in the absence of the singer. The episode has sparked a wider debate on artistic freedom versus cultural responsibility in Assam’s music scene.
