Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge express concern over Assam’s flood crisis, calling for stronger relief measures, long-term flood management and greater Central assistance
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed concern over Assam’s worsening flood situation, urging the Centre and the state government to intensify rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.
“The news of the deaths of many people in the devastating floods that have struck Assam is extremely heartbreaking,” Rahul Gandhi said, expressing condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with the millions affected. Calling for a long-term solution.
Gandhi stressed the need for a“robust and sustainable” flood management system based on scientific planning, early warning systems, resilient infrastructure and effective rehabilitation.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also voiced concern over the flood crisis, saying nearly 10 lakh people across 25 districts have been affected and at least 68 people have lost their lives. He urged the Centre to release substantial assistance from the PM-CARES Fund and provide adequate compensation to affected families.
Criticising the BJP, Kharge questioned its promise to make Assam “flood-free” within five years and alleged that the “double-engine government” had failed to establish an effective flood-control, erosion-management, and rehabilitation system. He also advocated stronger embankments, wetland restoration and climate-resilient infrastructure.
