Guwahati Flood Tragedy: Assam Govt Orders Probe After Woman Dies in Drain Incident

Inquiry launched after woman dies in Maligaon waterlogging; agencies put on alert amid continued rain threat

Guwahati: The Government of Assam has initiated a magisterial inquiry into the death of a woman during severe waterlogging in Guwahati, signalling a push to establish accountability in cases of preventable fatalities.

The decision followed a high-level review chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, who directed the District Commissioner to conduct a detailed probe and identify lapses. Officials emphasised that negligence leading to loss of life would be addressed strictly.

The victim, Payel Nath Das, was reportedly swept away after falling into an uncovered drain in Maligaon during intense rainfall. Poor visibility and strong water currents are believed to have contributed to the incident.

In response, authorities have tightened coordination among key agencies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) have been instructed to improve the timing and accuracy of forecasts and alerts. At the same time, the National Highways Authority of India has been tasked with ensuring proper drainage maintenance and continuous pump operations.

Civic bodies, including the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, have been placed on high alert, especially in flood-prone zones.

The review came after cloudburst-like rainfall dumped nearly 120 mm of rain within hours, paralysing parts of the city. While restoration efforts are underway, officials warned that further showers could aggravate the situation.
