Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has sought an independent inquiry into former Nagaon DC Devasish Sharma’s tenure, citing concerns over electoral neutrality and alleged financial irregularities
Guwahati: Congress MP from Jorhat Gaurav Gogoi has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to intervene in the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-election, raising concerns over the resignation of Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma and his alleged plans to contest the election on a BJP ticket.
In a post on X, Gogoi alleged that Sharma, while serving as DC-cum-District Election Officer (DEO), handled several sensitive aspects of the electoral process in the months leading up to the bypoll.
Gogoi claimed that decisions taken during Sharma’s tenure could have implications for the neutrality of the upcoming election. He also alleged irregularities involving 15th Finance Commission funds at the Gram Panchayat level and claimed that administrative influence may have been involved in their implementation.
The Congress MP called on the ECI to order an independent and time-bound inquiry into Sharma’s tenure as DC-cum-DEO, along with the alleged financial irregularities.
Gogoi further warned that failure to act could undermine public confidence in the electoral process. The allegations were made by Gogoi in his social media post. No independent findings establishing the claims have been cited so far.
Sharma recently took voluntary retirement from government service after his VRS request was accepted by the Assam government. His reported political plans have since triggered speculation ahead of the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-election.
