Gauhati University Defends NEP Fee Structure Amid Student Protests Over FYUGP Admissions

University says no arbitrary fee hike has been imposed under FYIMP and FYUGP, announces BPL fee waivers while students continue demanding clarity on fourth-year admissions

Guwahati: Amid growing protests over admission uncertainty under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, Gauhati University on Wednesday issued a detailed clarification defending its fee structure for the Five-Year Integrated Master’s Programme (FYIMP) and Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP).

The statement came a day after students of Darrang College staged demonstrations demanding clarity on seventh and eighth semester admissions under FYUGP. Protesters blocked roads and burned an effigy of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging that delays in admission guidelines had left many students uncertain about their academic future.

Responding to allegations of steep fee hikes, the university maintained that “no programme fee has been increased arbitrarily” and termed several reports “factually incorrect”.

University authorities said FYIMP was introduced in 2023 under a self-financing model because no separate government grants or infrastructure support were provided for the implementation of NEP-related reforms. Officials added that additional classrooms and new academic infrastructure were developed using internal resources.

The university clarified that semester fees were initially fixed at Rs 16,500 for science streams and Rs 14,500 for arts streams. It also announced a Rs 2,000 reduction in fees for even and later semesters from the 2025–26 academic session.

In a major relief measure, Gauhati University confirmed that eligible BPL students enrolled under FYIMP would receive fee waivers from the current semester onward.

The university further urged students and media organisations to verify information before circulating claims publicly.
