Amri MLA Dr Habbey Teron was unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, with members across party lines extending their support and congratulations

Guwahati: First-time BJP legislator Dr Habbey Teron was unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday, July 6, after no other candidate contested the post.
Announcing the result, Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass said three nominations had been filed in support of Teron, making his election unanimous. “As there is no other nomination, I declare Dr Habbey Teron as the Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly,” Dass announced in the House. Dr Teron represents the newly created Amri Assembly constituency, which came into existence following the 2023 delimitation exercise.
Following his election, members from both the treasury and opposition benches congratulated the new Deputy Speaker. Leaders of the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) extended their best wishes and assured him of their full cooperation during his tenure.
The unanimous election reflected a rare show of consensus across party lines on the opening day of the Assembly proceedings.
