‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’: Assam Plants Over 1.02 Crore Saplings on World Environment Day

Powered by more than 35 lakh SHG members, Assam emerged as a standout performer in the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, which has crossed 80 crore plantations since 2024

Guwahati: Assam achieved a major environmental milestone on World Environment Day, planting more than 1.02 crore saplings in just over eight hours and emerging as one of the leading contributors to the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.

The state-wide drive was spearheaded by Assam’s Nari Shakti, with 35,34,746 Self-Help Group (SHG) members planting 1,02,35,632 saplings across districts in a record-setting effort aimed at expanding green cover and combating climate change.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the collective effort, stating, “1.02 crore saplings in a single day. This is what collective resolve can achieve. Led by our #NariShakti and the will of the people of Assam, my heartfelt compliments to everyone who contributed to this remarkable effort.”

Among the districts, Barpeta recorded the highest plantation count with 5.54 lakh saplings, followed by Golaghat (5.36 lakh), Biswanath (5.36 lakh), Nagaon (5.25 lakh) and Dhubri (5.12 lakh).

The achievement came as India intensified its nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign on World Environment Day. Across India, the campaign gained fresh momentum on World Environment Day as leaders, schoolchildren, government officials and citizens participated in large-scale plantation drives. States including Maharashtra, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh organised tree-planting programmes, while ministries and public institutions joined hands to promote environmental conservation.

Aligned with the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” the initiative has now crossed 80 crore plantations since 2024. Its unique emotional appeal of planting a tree in honour of one’s mother has helped transform the campaign into a nationwide movement, extending from classrooms and communities to Indian missions abroad.
