“BJP Tried to Steal the Election”: Congress Leader Rakibul Hussain Demands Repolling in Nagaon

Congress leader accuses BJP of irregularities in Samaguri, seeks Election Commission intervention as counting approaches

Nagaon: Senior Congress leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain on Wednesday alleged large-scale rigging during the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll and demanded repolling at polling stations where he claimed serious irregularities had occurred.

Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Nagaon, Hussain accused the BJP of attempting to “steal” the election, alleging that several polling stations in the Samaguri Assembly segment were affected.

The Congress leader urged the Election Commission of India to order fresh polling at booths where the alleged irregularities were significant. The Nagaon District Congress Committee has also submitted a complaint to the Commission, seeking action.

Hussain had earlier alleged that unidentified people travelling in around 11 vehicles entered several polling stations in Samaguri and attempted to rig the election. He criticised BJP candidate Devashish Sharma over the alleged irregularities but did not identify those allegedly involved or provide details of every booth concerned.

The allegations come after polling concluded on Tuesday with around 76 per cent turnout across the constituency’s eight Assembly segments. Officials reported minor EVM glitches at some booths but said the affected machines were replaced.

The bypoll saw a three-way contest between BJP’s Devashish Sharma, Congress’ Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Counting is scheduled for October 9.
