Former Nagaon DC Devasish Sharma gets BJP ticket for October 6 bypoll as preparations intensify across the constituency
Nagaon: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named former Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election in Assam’s Nagaon constituency.
The BJP’s Central Election Committee approved Sharma’s candidature for constituency 09-Nagaon, according to an announcement issued by the party’s central office in New Delhi on Friday.
Sharma, along with journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita, joined the BJP on Tuesday, ahead of the by-election. The Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election is scheduled for October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9.
The seat fell vacant after Pradyut Bordoloi left the Congress and joined the BJP. Bordoloi had won the Nagaon seat on a Congress ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and later won the Dispur Assembly seat in the recent state polls.
More than 11.38 lakh voters across five Assembly constituencies are eligible to vote in the by-election. Authorities have arranged 1,339 polling stations across 684 locations.
Voters aged above 85 and persons with disabilities can opt for home voting, while eligible service voters can cast their ballots through postal voting. Authorities have also directed residents in Nagaon and Morigaon to deposit firearms ahead of polling.
A total of 149 officials will be deployed for election duties, with two strong rooms to be established for the by-election.
