Bengal Votes in Final Phase: 142 Seats Decide Outcome Amid High Turnouts

Polling across southern strongholds sees brisk participation, while sporadic tensions and allegations surface

West Bengal: West Bengal entered the decisive second and final phase of its Assembly elections on Wednesday, with voting underway across 142 constituencies in the politically crucial southern belt. Polling began at 7 am and will continue until 6:30 pm, with voters in queue allowed to cast their ballots.

This phase covers key districts such as Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly and Purba Bardhaman regions that have traditionally backed the Trinamool Congress. In 2021, the party secured a dominant victory here, winning 123 of these seats.

Meanwhile, early trends indicated strong voter participation. Turnout crossed 40 per cent by 11 am, reflecting steady engagement despite scattered rain in some areas. Officials maintained that “polling is taking place peacefully,” with extensive deployment of central forces ensuring security.

However, the day also witnessed isolated tensions. A Lathi-charge was reported in Kolkata after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was surrounded by TMC supporters. Additionally, clashes between party workers, allegations of voter intimidation, and complaints regarding EVM irregularities surfaced in districts like Nadia and Falta. The Election Commission stated that such issues are being verified and “appropriate action will follow.”

Leaders across parties expressed confidence. While the BJP claimed momentum for change, the TMC asserted its continued dominance in the region.

As voting progresses, the outcome of this phase is set to determine whether Mamata Banerjee secures another term or the opposition makes significant inroads.
