State-of-the-art veterinary hospital, wildlife rescue centre, world’s largest bird aviary and modern animal enclosures form part of the ambitious redevelopment project
Guwahati: The Assam Government is accelerating its ambitious Rs 360 crore modernisation of the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing that nearly 27 per cent of the project has already been completed.
Reviewing the progress of the flagship initiative, Sarma said the redevelopment is aimed at transforming the zoo into a modern, wildlife-centric zoological park that meets contemporary standards of animal care, conservation and visitor experience.
The project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, a dedicated wildlife rescue centre, what is expected to be the world’s largest bird aviary, and new animal enclosures designed to provide improved habitats and strengthen conservation efforts.
The Chief Minister said the modernisation programme, launched last year, is progressing steadily and will significantly enhance both wildlife conservation infrastructure and visitor amenities.
To ensure the project meets global standards, Sarma directed officials to study the functioning of some of India’s largest and most advanced zoological parks. He said adopting best practices in animal care, habitat management, conservation and visitor services from leading institutions would help shape the Assam State Zoo into a world-class wildlife facility.
Once completed, the redevelopment is expected to substantially upgrade the zoo’s infrastructure, improve habitats for animals, strengthen rescue and rehabilitation facilities, and provide a more engaging experience for visitors.
The state government believes the project will position the Assam State Zoo among India’s leading zoological institutions while reinforcing its role in wildlife conservation, research and environmental education.
