Shops along the approach road to Kamakhya Temple have been removed as the state begins the first phase of the PM-DevINE-funded project aimed at improving pilgrim facilities
Guwahati: The Assam government has begun preliminary work on the Rs 498-crore Kamakhya Corridor project with the removal of shops and commercial establishments along the main approach road to the Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill.
The eviction drive marks the first phase of the project, which is being developed under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) to improve infrastructure and enhance the pilgrimage experience at one of India’s most revered Shakti Peethas.
Officials said the work commenced after extensive consultations involving the state government, the Kamakhya Temple management committee and local residents. They reiterated that the corridor will be developed without compromising the temple’s historical, cultural and spiritual heritage.
The project aims to improve pedestrian movement, reduce congestion around the temple complex, upgrade civic amenities and provide better facilities for the millions of devotees who visit the shrine every year.
The government said the corridor will preserve the temple’s architectural character while modernising the surrounding infrastructure. Once completed, the project is expected to boost religious tourism and generate greater economic activity in the region.
