Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma says the resolution will reaffirm the state’s long-standing opposition to uranium mining and remove any ambiguity over the government’s stand
Shillong: The Meghalaya government will introduce a formal resolution opposing and banning uranium mining in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Thursday, reiterating that his government has never approved uranium extraction.
The announcement comes amid renewed speculation over the possibility of uranium mining in Meghalaya. Clarifying the government’s position, Sangma said the proposed resolution would reaffirm the state’s long-standing opposition and remove any ambiguity on the issue.
“The Meghalaya Government will pass a resolution to formally oppose and ban uranium mining in Meghalaya,” the chief minister said, adding that the government has consistently maintained its stand against the activity.
Sangma said the resolution is aimed at addressing public concerns over the environmental and social impact of uranium mining, an issue that has remained contentious in the state for decades. He added that the move would put an end to speculation by clearly stating the government’s official position.
The proposed resolution comes amid sustained opposition from local communities, who have repeatedly raised concerns over the environmental, health and social implications of uranium mining. Once adopted, the resolution will serve as Meghalaya’s formal policy against uranium mining.
