The 5-km emergency landing facility in Nalbari will support military and civilian aircraft operations during crises, disasters and national emergencies

Guwahati: Assam is set to expand its strategic infrastructure network with the approval of a 5-kilometre Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) along National Highway 27 in Nalbari district.
According to officials, the proposed facility will convert a stretch between Tihu and Madhapur into an emergency runway capable of handling military transport aircraft as well as civilian flights during critical situations.
Nalbari MLA Jayanta Mallabaruah described the project as a major addition to India’s strategic defence grid in the Northeast. In a statement shared on social media, he said the “heavily reinforced auxiliary runway” is being developed to support “rapid troop deployment and emergency supply operations” during national security crises and severe natural disasters.
Officials stated that the runway will be built according to strict military specifications and designed to accommodate heavy aircraft movement. The facility is also expected to function as an alternative logistics and operational hub during emergencies.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is coordinating with local authorities to maintain no-construction zones and enforce zoning regulations around the approach corridor to ensure operational safety.
The Nalbari project marks Assam’s second highway-based emergency airstrip after the operationalisation of a similar facility near Dibrugarh. Authorities believe the initiative will significantly enhance disaster response capabilities and strengthen India’s strategic preparedness across the Northeast.
