The content creator claimed the exchange was scripted as humour, while Meghalaya MP James P. K. Sangma urged Delhi Police to register an FIR and investigate the alleged racial abuse

New Delhi: Content creator Amir Shokeen has apologised after a video showing him allegedly making racially derogatory remarks against a teenager from Tripura went viral, triggering widespread outrage across the Northeast. Shokeen claimed the exchange was scripted as humour and said he had no intention of insulting the youth or offending anyone.
In a Facebook video, he said he knew the teenager and that both were joking during the exchange. He also issued a specific apology to the people of Tripura, expressing regret over the controversy.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Rajya Sabha MP James P. K. Sangma has written to Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, seeking an FIR and an investigation into the alleged racial harassment. He urged police to preserve digital evidence and ensure the youth’s identity and safety were protected.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged abuse and warned that the accused would face action. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has also directed the state’s DGP to coordinate with Delhi Police.
Tripura Police has registered an FIR, while the Delhi Police Cyber Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit is investigating the matter.
Sangma said the incident highlighted the wider discrimination faced by people from the Northeast, arguing that alleged racial abuse should not be dismissed as humour. The allegations against Shokeen remain subject to investigation.
