The Raijor Dal chief criticised the government over delayed assistance to flood-hit families and raised concerns over rising prices and recurring floods
Sivasagar: As celebrations were held across Assam to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi chose the occasion to highlight the hardships of flood-hit families, observing September 17 as a “Black Day” in protest against the government’s handling of flood relief.
Gogoi said the observance was aimed at drawing attention to what his party described as delays in relief and compensation following the July floods. He alleged that Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo suffered extensive damage, with several families still awaiting assistance despite government surveys and assurances.
The Raijor Dal leader also demanded the dismissal of Assam Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain and sought the arrest of Sonari MLA Dharmeswar Konwar and Nazira MLA Mayur Borgohain. He further raised concerns over recurring floods and alleged coal mining along the Assam-Nagaland border.
Similarly, Bajali Congress leader Guptamani Sarma marked Modi’s birthday as “Loafers’ Day”, wearing black and criticising the BJP-led government over floods and rising prices. He questioned the Centre’s response to flood-hit families and criticised the celebrations involving the lighting of lamps.
The protests came as BJP workers and supporters across Assam and the country held programmes marking the Prime Minister’s birthday.
