The Registrar General of India extends the exercise by a month in the two districts due to the prevailing flood situation
Guwahati: The houselisting phase of Census 2027 has been extended in Assam’s Charaideo and Sivasagar districts following disruptions caused by the recent floods.
According to a gazette notification issued by Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan on September 17, houselisting operations and the housing census in the two districts will now continue until October 31, 2026, instead of the earlier September 30 deadline.
The extension was granted in view of the prevailing flood situation, which had also led to the suspension of training programmes and other preparatory activities in Sivasagar and Charaideo in August.
Across the rest of Assam, the houselisting exercise was conducted from August 17 to September 15 as part of the first phase of Census 2027.
The houselisting operation involves documenting structures, houses and households to prepare the framework for the subsequent population enumeration.
Census 2027 is being conducted in two phases, with houselisting operations scheduled between April and September 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027. The decennial Census, originally due in 2021, was postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
