Only 17% legislators face criminal cases, while 85% turn crorepatis, with the Association for Democratic Reforms data highlighting a shift in profiles

Guwahati: The criminal profile of Assam’s newly elected legislators has shown a marked improvement, with only 21 out of 126 MLAs (17%) declaring criminal cases, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms. This reflects a notable decline from 27% in 2021. Among them, 19 legislators (15%) face serious charges, including cases linked to attempted murder and crimes against women.
Party-wise differences remain significant. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 7 MLAs (9%) with cases, while the Indian National Congress records a higher proportion with 9 out of 19 MLAs (47%) facing criminal charges. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has two such MLAs, and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has one, whereas the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) stands out with a completely clean record.
At the same time, the financial profile of legislators has expanded sharply. As many as 85% of MLAs (107 legislators) are crorepatis, with total declared assets reaching Rs 1,112 crore. The average wealth per MLA has risen to Rs 8.82 crore, nearly double the Rs 4.59 crore recorded in 2021.
Among individuals, Badruddin Ajmal is the wealthiest MLA with assets exceeding Rs 226 crore, followed by Sewli Mohilary with around Rs 63 crore, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with approximately Rs 35 crore.
In party averages, AIUDF leads with Rs 117.77 crore, followed by BPF (Rs 9.92 crore), BJP (Rs 7.50 crore), Congress (Rs 6.51 crore), AGP (Rs 2.81 crore), and Raijor Dal (Rs 1.54 crore). Notably, all MLAs from AIUDF, AITC, and Raijor Dal fall in the crorepati category, while 90% of BJP legislators also meet this mark.
Based on sworn affidavits, the report highlights a shifting pattern in Assam’s political landscape, where declining criminal cases and rising wealth are shaping the profile of elected representatives.
