Guwahati: A century after his birth, the voice of Dr Bhupen Hazarika continues to live in the songs, memories and cultural identity of Assam. Today, the state marked the legendary singer, composer and filmmaker’s 100th birth anniversary with tributes at his memorial in Guwahati and the launch of year-long celebrations honouring his extraordinary contribution to Indian music and culture.
Widely remembered as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’, Hazarika gave voice to Assam’s landscapes, people, struggles and aspirations. His music crossed linguistic and geographical boundaries, reaching audiences across India while remaining deeply rooted in the cultural soul of the Northeast.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Hazarika, recalling how his voice carried “the soul of Assam and the spirit of the Northeast to the entire nation.” Modi said Hazarika’s life and work would continue to inspire generations.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Hazarika as more than a name, calling him “an emotion that lives in the heart and soul of Assam.” The Chief Minister said the centenary celebrations reaffirm the cultural icon’s enduring legacy.
At the Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Tirtha, people from different walks of life gathered to pay homage. Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Sarma and state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi were among those who offered tributes.
