Jonmoni Gogoi had been absconding since the October 26 shooting that killed five people in Guwahati, while the SIT continues questioning her husband

Guwahati: Jonmoni Gogoi, wife of prime accused Ghanakanta Gogoi in the October 26 Hotel Bilas Inn shooting that claimed five lives, has surrendered before Dhemaji Police, days after going missing following the incident.
She had been absconding since the night of the shooting, with police searching for her, the couple’s children and the cab driver who allegedly transported them after the incident. Investigators were also preparing to summon her for questioning to establish the sequence of events.
Meanwhile, Ghanakanta Gogoi remains in seven-day police custody and is being questioned daily by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) at Latasil Police Station. He reportedly told investigators that he opened fire in self-defence, a claim police are examining.
The shooting occurred at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati’s Ulubari area, killing co-owners Helena Bharali and Bhudev Bharali, Helena’s son Debarshi, daughter-in-law Rinika, and caretaker Narayan Das. Investigators suspect a financial and lease dispute may have led to the attack.
Separately, a Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court has directed police to prevent custodial torture, ensure medical examinations every 24 hours and provide hygienic food and drinking water to the accused. The court also specified additional safeguards for any evidence-discovery proceedings conducted between sunset and sunrise.
