Hotel Bilas Inn Shooting: Five Killed, One Injured as Police Suspect Lease Dispute

Police arrest accused Ghanakanta Gogoi and recover a suspected firearm as preliminary investigations point to a dispute over the hotel’s lease agreement

Guwahati: A shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati’s Bora Service area around 9 pm on October 26 left six people with gunshot injuries, five of whom later succumbed to their injuries.

The sixth victim remains under treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The police have arrested the accused and suspect a dispute over the hotel’s lease agreement as the motive behind the attack.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta confirmed that the accused, identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, had been arrested within an hour of the incident. Police also recovered a .32-calibre pistol suspected to have been used in the shooting.

According to preliminary investigations, the firing stemmed from a dispute between the hotel owners and the person who had leased the property. Gogoi had reportedly held the hotel’s lease for around a year.

Police said four of the deceased belonged to the same family, while the fifth victim and the injured survivor were from the same village. The identities of all victims are subject to formal verification.

The accused is being questioned as investigators continue inquiries to establish the sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the shooting.
