Garima Saikia Garg and Palme Borthakur seek coordinated prosecution efforts, timely legal challenges and stronger witness protection in the singer’s death case

Guwahati: The family of late singer Zubeen Garg has urged Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to ensure effective prosecution, oppose bail pleas by the accused and expedite the trial in the singer’s death case.
Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and sister, Palme Borthakur, met the Governor at Lok Bhavan on October 28 and submitted a memorandum expressing concern over the Gauhati High Court granting bail to two accused.
The family urged the state government to challenge bail orders before the Supreme Court wherever legally justified and establish a coordinated prosecution mechanism under the Advocate General to monitor proceedings across courts.
The memorandum also called for effective presentation of documentary, forensic and digital evidence, witness protection and safeguards against interference with evidence. It sought a thorough investigation into reported financial irregularities and suspected criminal activities allegedly involving some accused.
The family specifically urged authorities to take all legally permissible steps to oppose the bail pleas of North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma.
“Justice for Zubeen should transcend political differences and remain a shared commitment to truth, fairness and the rule of law,” the memorandum stated.
The family clarified that its appeal was not intended to interfere with judicial independence and urged supporters to pursue their demand peacefully.
