Bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan to pronounce order as trial in Assam continues

Guwahati: The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce its order on October 5 on the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case concerning the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore last year.
A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan had concluded arguments in the matter and listed it for further hearing on October 5. The court had earlier sought details on the progress of the trial in Assam while considering Mahanta’s plea.
During the previous hearing, the Assam government informed the court that the trial was underway and that statements of 94 of the 394 listed witnesses had been recorded as of August 14. The state also said several key witnesses based in Singapore were yet to be examined and were expected to testify shortly.
A fast-track court in Assam has framed murder charges against four accused, including Mahanta. All the accused have pleaded not guilty. The trial is continuing with witness examination.
The Supreme Court’s order on Monday is expected to determine whether Mahanta receives bail while the trial remains underway.
