KSU Warns of Further Action Over Shree Cement Issue: Seeks Recruitment Reforms

The Khasi Students’ Union has urged the Meghalaya government to ensure a transparent inquiry into the Shree Cement issue and implement reforms in public recruitment.

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has warned of further action if the Meghalaya government fails to address its concerns, while expressing hope that an ongoing inquiry into the Shree Cement issue will produce a satisfactory outcome.

A KSU delegation met Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday to discuss five issues the union has been pursuing since August 3. The union also questioned the legality of the public hearing and called for timely action based on the inquiry’s findings.

KSU general secretary Reuben Najiar said the union welcomed the formation of a fact-finding committee to examine concerns surrounding the Shree Cement public hearing. However, he questioned why affected residents and workers in East Jaintia Hills should have to travel to Shillong to present their grievances, urging the committee to visit the area.

On recruitment, the KSU welcomed the state government’s decision to discontinue personal interviews for Group C posts from January 1, 2027, but said the move should follow the Centre’s 2016 directive on the issue.

Najiar said the union had submitted recommendations to reform the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) and Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), calling for greater transparency and merit-based selection. He also referred to allegations of payments being sought for contractual jobs but clarified that the union had no evidence to substantiate them.

The KSU said it would continue pressing for action on its demands.
