KSU submits memorandums to Khasi-Jaintia MLAs instead of Friday’s rally, while announcing fresh protests over five key demands
Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday changed its agitation strategy, opting to submit memorandums to all 36 Khasi-Jaintia legislators instead of holding a procession and sit-in at Khyndailad.
KSU assistant general secretary Pynshai Rani said the petitions were submitted through the Union’s local units and circles to pressure legislators to raise its five demands during the Meghalaya Assembly session beginning August 24. The organisation will also seek to submit memorandums to 24 Garo Hills legislators.
The KSU said it would continue its agitation until the state government addresses its demands. The Union will hold a sit-in on August 24 at the statue of U Woh Kiang Nangbah, opposite Shillong Civil Hospital, from 11 am.
On August 25, similar demonstrations will be held across seven districts of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. The KSU will not hold an agitation on August 22 to avoid inconvenience to candidates appearing for the MPSC LDA examination.
Among its demands are scrapping the July 31 Shree Cement public hearing, action against officials allegedly involved in the process, implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, entry-exit facilitation centres and implementation of the Inner Line Permit.
The Union has also sought enforcement of the amended migrant workers law, resolution of recruitment issues at NEIGRIHMS and reforms in state recruitment, including changes to the MPSC and DSC.
