Akhil Gogoi calls for statewide mobilisation as the Nyay Dabi Samiti plans major protests and a mass rally demanding justice for the late singer
Guwahati: The campaign demanding justice for late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg is set to intensify, with the Zubeen Garg Nyay Dabi Samiti planning statewide protests and a mass rally ahead of the Supreme Court’s November 6 hearing on the bail pleas of two accused in the case.
The forum will hold a meeting at Zubeen Khetra in Assam at noon on October 25 to finalise its next course of action. Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has urged fans and supporters across the state to participate, irrespective of political affiliations.
The decision to step up the agitation was taken during an online meeting of the Samiti’s conveners on Thursday. The proposed campaign includes two to three major protests and a mass gathering at Zubeen Khetra before the court hearing.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the bail pleas of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Sekhar Goswami, who are accused in connection with Garg’s death. The Samiti has also invited the singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, to the October 25 meeting.
As part of its next steps, the forum plans to write to the Assam and Union governments seeking intervention to challenge bail granted to the accused. It will also seek the presence of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta at the November 6 hearing, if required.
The Samiti has called for strict punishment for those found responsible for the singer’s death, including life imprisonment or the death penalty where applicable under the law.
KMSS general secretary Bidyut Saikia said the meeting would bring together representatives and supporters from districts across Assam to coordinate the campaign.
