ECI to Revise Electoral Rolls in 17 States, UTs Ahead of 2027 Assembly Polls

January 1, 2027, will be the qualifying date as the poll panel seeks to enrol new voters and update existing electoral records ahead of Assembly elections

Guwahati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will conduct a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union territories, including poll-bound Manipur, with January 1, 2027, set as the qualifying date.

In a communication to the respective chief electoral officers, the poll panel said the exercise would focus on enrolling eligible voters, particularly young and first-time electors, correcting errors and updating existing records.

The revision comes ahead of Assembly elections scheduled in several states in 2027. The terms of the Assemblies in Manipur, Goa, Punjab and Uttarakhand are due to end in March, while the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s term expires on May 22, 2027.

The SSR is a routine process that allows eligible citizens to register as voters and correct details such as their addresses. It differs from a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which involves more extensive verification, including house-to-house visits by Booth Level Officers.

The SIR exercise has drawn criticism from opposition parties, which have raised concerns about documentation requirements and the possible exclusion of eligible voters, particularly migrant workers, elderly people and economically disadvantaged groups.

The Election Commission has maintained that intensive revision aims to improve electoral roll accuracy by identifying duplicate and ineligible entries while ensuring that all eligible citizens are included.
