Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam Leaves for Delhi After Police Summons in JNU-Linked Case

Supporters gathered at Imphal International Airport as the Congress MP departed to respond to a summons issued by Delhi Police

Imphal: Congress MP from Inner Manipur, Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, left for New Delhi on Thursday, October 15, after being summoned by Delhi Police in connection with an FIR linked to allegations of sexual harassment at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Supporters gathered at Imphal International Airport to express solidarity with the parliamentarian, raising slogans including “We support Oja Bimol” and “Stand for Oja Bimol” before his departure.

The case was registered following a complaint by JNU’s Chief Security Officer. Akoijam, who serves as a professor at the university, said he was travelling to Delhi in response to the police summons.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, he urged people not to worry and expressed confidence that justice would be delivered, despite what he described as injustices against him.

Akoijam also linked the development to what he described as the broader struggle for justice faced by the people of Manipur over several decades.

“I am acutely aware that today is October 15. This summon is the beginning to fight for injustice that people is facing for many years,” he said. His reference to October 15 appeared to allude to the date associated with Manipur’s merger with India in 1949.

The allegations against Akoijam remain unproven, and police proceedings are ongoing.
