A Year Without Zubeen: Assam Remembers the Voice That Became Its Soul

One year after Zubeen Garg’s death, fans gather at Zubeen Kshetra to remember an artist whose influence reached far beyond music

Guwahati: A year has passed since Assam lost Zubeen Garg, but at Zubeen Kshetra, his absence felt as deeply as ever. Hundreds of admirers gathered at the memorial, singing his songs, remembering his words and mourning a man whose presence had become inseparable from Assam’s cultural life.

For many, Garg was never merely a singer. He was a composer, actor, filmmaker and poet, but more importantly, he became a cultural voice through which generations found a sense of belonging.

His work carried Assamese identity beyond geographical boundaries, while his willingness to experiment brought different sounds, languages and communities together.

The three-day commemorative programme at Zubeen Kshetra has brought together fans, artistes and family members through prayers, performances and tributes. Singer Angaraag ‘Papon’ Mahanta urged young admirers to keep singing Garg’s compositions, saying his songs should continue to live through new voices.

Yet the remembrance carries another emotion, the demand for answers surrounding Garg’s death remains alive. Veteran actor Arun Hazarika reiterated the call for justice, while Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi raised concerns over the pace of the investigation and the incomplete development of the memorial site.

As Assam remembers Zubeen today, the grief is not simply for an artist who is gone. It is for a familiar voice, a restless spirit and a man who made millions feel that their stories, language and identity mattered. His voice may have fallen silent, but the culture he helped shape continues to sing.
