Assam Government to Form 15 New Welfare Councils to Monitor Scheme Delivery: Seeks CBI Inquiry into Floods

The proposed councils will assess welfare schemes through public feedback, while the state plans to seek a CBI investigation into the floods affecting Sivasagar, Charaideo and other parts of Upper Assam

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on Tuesday, November 3, approved the formation of 15 councils to monitor government welfare schemes, assess their impact and recommend improvements based on public feedback.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the councils would review initiatives such as Orunodoi, Ayushman Bharat, Mukhya Mantri Ayushman Assam and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Each council will have nine members, including a Cabinet minister as chairperson, a vice-chairperson and seven other members. The bodies will engage with beneficiaries and submit recommendations to the state government.

In a separate decision, the Cabinet recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the floods that affected Sivasagar, Charaideo and other parts of Upper Assam. He said the state would send a formal request to the Centre within 10 days, while clarifying that the final decision rests with the Centre and the CBI.

The move comes amid demands for accountability over flood relief and compensation. Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi had staged an agitation seeking compensation for more than two lakh affected families, disputing the government’s assessment of around 55,000 affected families. He had also questioned the adequacy of the Rs 1,200 crore announced by the Centre.
