Political parties urged to follow MCC and expenditure rules as October 6 Lok Sabha bypoll preparations gather pace
Nagaon: Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer on September 10 reviewed preparations for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election with representatives of recognised political parties, outlining key election rules and procedures ahead of polling on October 6.
The meeting focused on compliance with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), campaign regulations and monitoring of election expenditure. Parties were briefed on maintaining accounts, submitting expenditure statements within prescribed timelines and obtaining applicable rate charts from election authorities.
Officials also outlined polling-day identification rules, informing parties that voters can use any of 12 approved alternative documents in place of the Elector Photo Identity Card.
Candidates were advised to follow prescribed requirements for nomination photographs and maintain a separate bank account for election-related expenses. Officials also stressed the need for candidates or their authorised representatives to attend EVM randomisation and commissioning.
The first randomisation of EVMs and VVPATs is scheduled for September 11. The machines will be organised constituency-wise across the eight Assembly segments forming the Nagaon parliamentary constituency.
The CEO’s office called for strict adherence to election guidelines and urged political parties to cooperate in ensuring a free and peaceful poll.
The bypoll was necessitated after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party and later joined the BJP. He subsequently won the Dispur Assembly seat in the Assam Assembly elections.
