Assam BJP announces candidates for 38 wards as the party gears up for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election
Silchar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Assam Pradesh on September 8 released its list of 38 candidates for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election.
The list was announced by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia following a meeting of the party’s State Election Committee. The BJP has fielded candidates across 38 wards, covering open, Scheduled Caste (SC), SC women and women-reserved seats.
Among the candidates are Biswajit Das from Ward 1, Saurav Kanti Nath from Ward 2, Doli Das from Ward 3, Sibani Rani Das from Ward 4, Dipak Das from Ward 5 and Kanchan Deb from Ward 6.
The party has also nominated Ataur Rahman Laskar from Ward 17, Joy Das from Ward 18, Arabindu Das from Ward 19, Bhakti Sen Talukdar from Ward 20 and Sumana Das from Ward 21.
Other nominees include Paramita Chanda Gupta, Chandrima Deb, Pulak Das, Anushree Deb Bhattacharjee, Rituparna Bhattacharjee, Lipika Roy, Kuldeep Nihal Choudhury, Mrinalini Sinha, Rajashree Roy and Satarupa Dey.
The announcement comes days after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that the BJP’s candidate list would be released soon. The civic polls are expected to be a key contest for the ruling party in the Barak Valley.
Meanwhile, Congress’ candidate-selection meeting in Silchar turned contentious on September 8, with party MLA Aminul Haque Laskar accusing senior leaders of exerting pressure over nominations and alleging that financial dealings were influencing the process.
The meeting at Pak Road reportedly witnessed a heated exchange involving Laskar, Congress city block committee president Atanu Bhattacharjee and party worker Papon Dev. Laskar later claimed that some influential leaders were unable to field candidates in their own wards but were allegedly seeking to influence nominations in minority-dominated wards.
