The Raijor Dal chief said his meeting with CM Himanta Biswa Sarma failed to secure assurances on revising Assam’s disaster relief provisions
Sivasagar: Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday, September 1, announced a fresh agitation in Assam over flood relief measures, alleging that his meeting with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma failed to produce concrete assurances on revising the state’s disaster relief provisions.
Gogoi said he had submitted a memorandum seeking changes to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) relief manual, arguing that existing compensation does not adequately cover losses suffered by flood-affected families.
He announced a public meeting in Nazira on September 6, followed by visits to flood-hit areas from September 7 to 16. A major gathering will later be held in Guwahati, while a protest outside the Chief Minister’s Office is planned for September 16. The agitation will primarily demand Rs 10 lakh financial assistance for every flood-affected family.
Gogoi also criticised compensation provisions for damaged homes, household items, agricultural land, ponds and vehicles, calling for the relief manual to be revised. He further demanded that the floods be declared an “extreme disaster” or “national disaster” to enable greater central assistance.
