Sivasagar MLA demands full relief for flood-hit families and alleges mining-linked damage to river protection structures worsened flooding
Sivasagar: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi warned of an intensified protest if flood-affected people in his constituency do not receive the full relief promised by the Assam government, while alleging that mining activities along the Dikhow river contributed to the devastating floods.
Speaking about relief distribution, Gogoi said he would perform a “Tandav Nritya” on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s table if affected families failed to receive the promised assistance. He claimed nearly 80 per cent of his constituency had been affected, with many families losing homes and belongings.
Gogoi alleged discrepancies in beneficiary lists and questioned delays in distributing the Rs 15,000 one-time assistance announced for flood victims in Sivasagar and Charaideo. He also criticised the quality and reach of relief supplies and rescue operations.
In a separate Facebook Live, Gogoi alleged that Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain, Sonari MLA Dharmeswar Konwar and MLA Mayur Borgohain were linked to a “syndicate” involved in mining along the Dikhow. He claimed damaged coffer dams and river protection structures had contributed to flooding.
Gogoi disputed the government’s cloudburst explanation and claimed his team’s drone survey identified multiple factors behind the disaster. He urged the government to order an inquiry into the alleged mining activities and hold those responsible accountable.
The MLA further warned that if families who had lost everything were not provided the promised Rs 10 lakh assistance, he would intensify his protest and resign as MLA.
