Three more flood-related deaths push Assam’s toll to 78 as over 3 lakh people remain affected, while relief efforts intensify and political parties press for greater Central support
Guwahati: Assam’s flood death toll has risen to 78 after three more people died in Sivasagar and Golaghat, while 3,00,031 people remain affected across seven districts, according to the latest ASDMA bulletin.
Floodwaters continue to affect 551 villages under 21 revenue circles, with 21,523.08 hectares of cropland still submerged. Urban flooding also persists in parts of Kamrup Metropolitan, although no affected population has been officially reported there.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the flood situation has improved after rainfall stopped, but thousands remain unable to return home due to damaged houses, mud deposits and blocked roads. He ruled out seeking international aid, saying the Centre and the state are capable of handling the crisis.
Meanwhile, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the flood-hit areas, declare Assam’s recurring flood and erosion crisis a national calamity, and provide enhanced Central assistance.
