New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi intensified the Congress’s campaign over the NEET controversy by outlining five demands after being detained during the party’s protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi.
Gandhi, along with Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was detained by Delhi Police during the march to Lok Kalyan Marg and later released. While in detention, he released a video message demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise for the police action against student protesters.
The LoP further sought the resignations of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a full discussion on the issue in Parliament, action against police personnel accused of assaulting students, withdrawal of cases against student protesters, and immediate reforms to India’s education and examination system.
Questioning the state of education, Gandhi said repeated paper leaks and rising education costs were pushing families into distress. “Why are papers leaking? Why is education becoming so expensive?” he asked, adding that these were legitimate concerns that deserved debate rather than suppression.
The BJP rejected the allegations, accusing the Congress of politicising the issue, while the Opposition said it would continue pressing for a discussion in Parliament.
