Phaimol village reduced to ashes, Tangkhul settlements targeted, MLA questions security after alleged cross-border attack near Myanmar frontier

Imphal: Fresh violence has erupted along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Kamjong district after multiple villages were targeted in separate arson attacks, raising fresh concerns over security in the sensitive frontier region.
According to officials, unidentified miscreants allegedly set fire to Phaimol Kuki village around 12:30 pm on July 1, destroying at least 15 houses. The village, located near Border Pillar No. 113, had already been vacated due to the prevailing security situation, with residents taking shelter at Aishi village near an Assam Rifles camp. No casualties were reported, and the village church remained unharmed.
In a suspected retaliatory attack, armed miscreants allegedly attempted to torch Shangkhalok Tangkhul village near Border Pillar No. 101. Security forces intervened before the village could be completely destroyed, although several thatched shelters belonging to Myanmar refugees and a few Tangkhul houses were gutted. Seven additional Tangkhul houses sustained partial damage, while seven houses at nearby Huimine Thana were completely burnt.
Meanwhile, Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing alleged that suspected cadres of the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) crossed the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday and set fire to at least 12 houses and a local market at Kongkan Thana. He questioned how such an attack could occur barely three kilometres from an Assam Rifles post and urged the deployment of neutral forces such as the India Reserve Battalion (IRB).
Keishing said several border villages, including Namlee, Wanglee, Choro and Phaimol, have witnessed repeated attacks in recent months, highlighting the vulnerability of remote settlements. Police have registered suo motu cases, while security agencies have launched investigations and intensified operations in the affected areas.
