Manipur Power Deficit: MSPDCL Seeks 100 MW From NTPC Farakka

MSPDCL has sought Cabinet approval for 100 MW of power from NTPC Farakka at Rs 4.14 per unit as Manipur faces a growing electricity shortfall

Imphal: Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) has sought Cabinet approval to procure 100 MW of power from NTPC’s Farakka Super Thermal Power Project in West Bengal at Rs 4.14 per unit to address the state’s growing electricity shortage.

MSPDCL Managing Director M Rabi Singh said the additional power would help meet seasonal demand, particularly during winter. Manipur has an allocated power capacity of 291.69 MW, but actual availability fell to 160-170 MW in June and July, while peak demand touched 260 MW.

The supply shortage has been attributed to delayed monsoon conditions, dry spells and reduced hydropower generation. Winter demand is expected to rise to 300-310 MW, potentially leaving the state with a deficit of up to 150 MW.

MSPDCL has also secured a return-energy banking arrangement of 50-66 MW during peak hours from December 2026 to March 2027.

Meanwhile, revised electricity tariffs have increased domestic rates to Rs 5.36 per unit for the first 100 units, Rs 6.25 for 101-200 units and Rs 7.10 above 200 units. Commercial consumers will pay Rs 7.07, Rs 7.85 and Rs 8.30 per unit across the respective slabs.
